Lotus Lounge Interior

The 2007 Technoliday Party and benefit for the One Laptop per Child program went off without a hitch a few nights ago at the beautiful(!) Lotus Lounge on K Street in D.C. Donations were optional; still, $2800 was raised which was enough to get OLPC to ship 14 of their little greenish wonders out to welcoming chitlins. Shouts to Peter and everyone else who helped to organize a most excellent gathering. I met a bunch of interesting/cool people who I certainly hope to see again soon.

And pardon a gush, but the Lotus Lounge is definitely one of the nicest venues in D.C. It’s exactly big enough, the food is unique and excellent, the drinks are fast and friendly, the music and sound system is flawless, and the interior design is to die for. Just don’t forget your wallet.

Oh, and Nick took a bunch of people-shots at the event too.

I found some good content on the Westwind Computing website that provides nice explanations of all the hidden files and folders on Mac OS X (10.4.x) Tiger.

What are all these crazy files for?

These details are handy to have at your fingertips if you are setting up an up-to-date development web server on your Mac with XAMPP and Symfony. It’s also the kind of info that (in my experience) disappears without notice one day when the website it’s hosted on gets redesigned or taken off-line for some reason.

For this reason, I am going to more-or-less repeat the info on the Westwind Computing page in this post. I don’t think this really violates any copyrights because all this information is obviously freely available in official Apple documentation. Plus, I reformatted it (a lot), fixed some spelling and grammatical errors, and rewrote some sections for clarity. (more…)

I think there are several interpretations for the name of this blog. I'd like to pretend this was not an accident, but I'm probably not fooling anyone.

The name “remarkup” just came to me this morning. I immediately thought it had a kind of catchy, marketable ring to it. But I ended up actually buying the domain name because it’s the kind of Colbert-ish, combine-o-word (sans the funny) that leads to multiple interpretations – all of which are applicable to this blog’s subject matter. (more…)
